What is The Independent Dance Artists Network?

The Independent Dance Artists Network was set up by a group of professional dance artists from throughout the UK, and is facilitated by Dance UK. The group is chaired by Gill Clarke, an independent dancer, choreographer and teacher, who is also a member of the Dance UK Executive Committee. In this context the word "Independent" means dance artists not in receipt of ongoing funding to make, perform or stage work, or not employed on a full time basis by a dance company. This definition covers the majority of the professional dancers working in the UK - most of whom make their living through a portfolio of activities within the professional, educational and wider community settings.

What does The Independent Dance Artists Network do?

The Independent Dance Artists Network aims to:

  • Empower artists through direct communication and sharing of ideas/services/skills with other artists.
  • Minimise feelings of geographical and artistic isolation.
  • Offer artists equal access to information.
  • Give artists a stronger voice in national and strategic debate.

In meeting these aims the network:

  • provides communication between artists throughout the country via an email list called the 'Independent Dance Artists' List'. The Independent Dance Artists' List allows independent dancers to communicate with each other easily and cheaply. It is used to share information, advertise job and funding opportunities and ask for help and advice. There are currently around 140 Independent Dance Artists using the list, and this number is growing each week.
  • holds an annual national forum for dance artists providing an opportunity to debate issues and exchange views which might be drawn from regional artists groups and from topics discussed via the email list.

How can I become involved with this network?

All Independent Dance Artists who are members of Dance UK are welcome to join the email list. Please email info@danceuk.org to request an invitation to join the group.
