Launch graduate career day at The Place

Saturday 5 March

Dance UK and The Place invited final year dance students and recent graduates to Launch 2011

What is Launch?

A professional development day. Every year Launch offers essential seminars plus hands-on practical advice from leading dance professionals, networking opportunities, and a chat show style discussion session. This year Launch introduced the portfolio career, asking why have one path when you could have many?

Which dance professionals will be speaking?

Speakers included Andre Portasio, teacher and former dancer with English National Ballet,  Anja Schall Pilates practitioner, Mayuri Boonham, director of ATMA, contemporary Indian Dance Company,  Lucy Field freelancer, Steven Brett venue manager for Nightingale Theatre independent producer and former dancer,  Robert Hylton artistic director and choreographer for Urban Classicism, Rachel Krische, senior lecturer in Contemporary Dance Leeds Metropolitan University, and Kate Scanlan project manager for British Dance Edition 2012.

Launch 2011 was chaired by Rachel Krische. The four seminars covered: choreography, dance and education, administrative roles and freelance careers. The day also included top tips for working in different areas of the dance sector.

  • Robert Hylton will shared his experience of becoming a choreographer and talk about key performance platforms in the UK and abroad. See Robert's profile in the UK Choreographers' Directory  here.
  • Kate Scanlan, who has worked as director of education at Rambert Dance Company, project manager at Breakin’ Convention and, most recently, project manager for British Dance Edition 2012 (BDE 2012), discussed different approaches to working in dance and education.
  • There was a seminar on administrative career path roles across the dance landscape, encompassing the roles of manager and producer.
  • Lucy Field, an experienced dance artist, freelancer and programme manager for Recreational and Prevocational dance at The Place, spoke about her experience as a freelancer, and gave advice on the things you need to know before braving it alone.

To close the day Launch 2011 attendees had the chance to question dance professionals Teneisha Booner (tbc) Andre Portasio, Anja Schall, Mayuri Boonham, and CandoCo Dance Company in a ‘chat show’ style Q & A session.
