As balletLORENT celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company is delighted to announce details of a new work, The Night Ball, premiering at MEM, Wallsend on 11th and 12th July 2013.
Established in 1993 by Artistic Director, Liv Lorent, balletLORENT has come a long way in 20 years. Initially based in London, Liv relocated to Newcastle in 1996 when her love affair with the North-East began. The company is a very proud resident of the city and is thrilled to be celebrating this important anniversary with a new work which will be made and premiered on Tyneside before embarking on a national tour.
The Night Ball is an exciting, performance and participatory event inspired by two of the company’s most loved and immersive works – The Ball and la nuit intime.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you for the magic that you wove, for the romance of partner dancing and the deep generosity of spirit in sharing it all with us. There was an intimacy and delight in all that you did – what a fantastic privilege to be part of it all for the delicious evening." (Audience Member, The Ball)
Following the company’s successful recent tour of Rapunzel, a large-scale production for family audiences (Winner ‘Performance of the Year 2012’ Journal Culture Awards), Liv Lorent has now created something very different. A totally unique and interactive event, The Night Ball celebrates the joy of social dancing and creates an environment where the beauty of losing yourself to movement and music becomes the privilege of everyone in the room.
Passionate couple dances, wallflower solos and exuberant ensemble dancing influenced by countless movement styles will feature in this 70 minute show which is set in the round with cabaret seating. The evening continues as the dance floor and bar remain open and the DJ plays on, giving the audience the chance to throw their own moves as well as the rare opportunity to be partnered by one of balletLORENT's ten professional dancers.
As part of the project, the company will also be working with communities local to each touring venue, giving audience members the chance to star in cameo roles. The dancers will lead pre-performance workshops, teaching steps from couple dances featured in the show. Those taking part in the workshops will then be the first people to join the professional dancers as the performance comes to end before the night evolves into an open floor.
Liv Lorent is delighted to be working with a great team of collaborators including Costume Designer, Michele Clapton (HBO’s Game of Thrones, TV dramas Sense and Sensibility) and Lighting Designer, Malcolm Rippeth with Sound Production/DJ by Ben Ponton (:zoviet*france:).
Liv Lorent says:
“When balletLORENT presents its site-specific works we want to offer more than just a performance – it’s an evening out of the ordinary performed by beautiful and generous dancers who want to share a passion for dancing through their bodies and souls.
"So many of us don't dance in front of other people because of self-consciousness or a desire to be a different kind of dancer than we are. The Night Ball is an occasion to experience dance as one of our basic instincts. We are presenting dance as beautiful, charming, necessary, sometimes a little unhinged, but ultimately an extraordinary human achievement.
"Men and women dancing is often a beautiful thing to witness, and can be a sublime thing to experience. Together, the audience and the dancers create an environment not found anywhere else, where each person can feel that there is a beauty in the act of dancing, especially when motivated by a real emotional necessity for moving one’s body to music.
"The Night Ball is made for people who are afraid of dancing as well as those who are already in love with it. We hope to leave our audiences with memories they will want to return to again and again.”
The Night Ball is a truly unforgettable experience and is accompanied by another of balletLORENT’s famously eclectic and inspired soundtracks.
The Night Ball will tour a limited number of performances nationally from July 2013.
