Dance Proms at the Royal Albert Hall: an enthralling eclectic display of dance excellence! The glowing responses of performers and audience members alike that attended the Dance Proms on the 14 November 2011, speak of an experience to be truly treasured. Not only did the event inspire an exuberant eruption of claps and cheers from the audience’s appreciative standing ovation, but it also inspired the immediate wishes of many for the event to become annual. A touching testament to the evening’s success.
Over 450 young dancers took to the iconic Royal Albert Hall stage, displaying a sensational array of talent and enthusiasm in a variety of diverse dance styles including ballet, tap, contemporary and ballroom. The event brought to light the rich vibrancy of what the UK’s dance scene has to offer. The tangible excitement of all involved was nothing less than spellbinding.
Dance Proms debut had the uniqueness of a first, with the tantalizing promise of longevity. As suggested by Chairman of ISTD Peter Kyle in a video of the Dance Proms, the true beauty of the occasion is that it unites such a range of gifted dancers from all areas, styles and walks of life showcasing their passion together.
This wonderful combination of inclusiveness in the variety of acts performing and the exclusivity of such a prestigious venue is absolute genius. The dancers, teachers, 50 to 100 strong back stage team and the organisers have been repeatedly congratulated for their hard work and commitment to the project. I believe it is this steadfast dedication to the evening and to the art form at large that has ensured that the Dance Proms was utterly unforgettable. Not only was there beautifully executed technique on show, but there was also innovative choreography and visually stunning costuming.
Erin Sanchez from Dance UK attended the event and commented:
“I was so impressed with the quality of the performance and the sheer number of students who participated. The show was an excellent expression of the vibrancy and variety of dancers who are training in the UK, and it spoke volumes about the quality of educational experiences available, across dance styles, ages, and locations. The passion for dance was evident in the students, and it was so powerful to see all of them perform together at the end of the show. Thank you again for having me at this fabulous and inspiring event.”
I also believe that the Dance Proms have made such an apt collage of the remarkable quality and constructive power of what dance has to offer in this country, at such an opportune time. In the bleak realms of financial insecurity both within the arts and for the UK at large, Dance Proms is a beacon of patriotic exuberance and delight, representing not only the compelling heart of dance but the steadfast heart of the UK. I would not miss next year for the world, Dance Proms needs to be here to stay!
