Woking Dance Festival presents Summer Shorts 2011

Summers Shorts 2011 is a two-week festival of events celebrating dance in the community. The festival is being led by Woking Dance Festival’s Young Ambassadors, a group of 16-25 year olds who came together this May. The festival starts on Saturday 23 July with the outdoor led dance festival, which is FREE to watch with opportunities to take part. The second FREE event Encounter is taking place on Saturday 30 July, and is an indoor event that will consist of come and try workshops for all ages, performances to watch and a trade fair of anything to do with dance to browse.

And that’s not all, there is also a two-week dance school for young people called Initiate and a two week film project called Film Fusion for young people aged 11-21 year olds; the dance project gives an opportunity to work with one of four professional choreographers and the second a professional filmmaker. The young people will have the opportunity to showcase their work in performances at the end of the two weeks at Rhoda McGaw Theatre on Fri 5 & Sat 6 August.

The Outdoorfestival will take place on Saturday 23 July in and around Woking town centre. There will be national, local and emerging dance artists showcasing their work on the day, along with some surprises to look out for including a ‘T Mobile style’ thrilling mass participation event. StopGAP Dance Company will be performing on the day, with three separate performances of the premiere of their fantastic new work 'Spun Productions' at 12noon, 1.30pm and 3pm.

On Saturday 30 July the dance taster day Encounter will be taking place. Anyone can come along and take part in an interactive dance workshop. You can choose from a number of different styles including Contemporary, Salsa, Hip Hop, Ballet dance and much more. There will also be a trade fair where you can browse stands by local dance artists, schools and companies, buy products and get career advice from dance professionals. It will be held at HG Wells Conference and Events Centre, Woking, GU21 6HJ 10.00am - 4.30pm. Local Woking resident and Young Ambassador Jessica Walrond says of the Encounter:

Initiate and Film Fusion are taking place from 25 July to 6 August. Initiate is a two week summer dance school for young people 11-21 years. They will get the chance to perform and work with amazing professional choreographers, including Northern Ballet Master Daniel de Andrade, Hip Hop artist Robert Hylton, members of Hofesh Shechter Company and the Artistic Director of Movement Angol Francis Angol with his African Contemporary dance style. Film Fusion will give young people the opportunity to work with a professional film maker, to make four short documentary dance films of the Initiate project. The Initiate and Film Fusion performances will be taking place at Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking, GU21 6GQ on Friday 5 August at 7pm and Saturday 6th August at 2pm and 7pm.
